New Pennine Golf Trail launched
In Yorkshire and Lancashire
Words: John Dean
Five golf courses spanning the Pennines have launched their own golf trail.
Clitheroe GC, Woodsome Hall GC, Huddersfield GC, Manchester GC and Pleasington GC have all joined in the scheme.
“The backbone of England, stretching from Derbyshire in the heart of the nation to the Scottish borders in the north, is characterized by stunning views and wild heather–clad moorland in a natural, unspoiled countryside setting,” said a spokesman.
“Often considered to be the most scenic part of England, the Pennines have long attracted visitors eager the soak up their relaxing qualities and they flock in their thousands to walk The Pennine Way, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, or to take part in numerous outdoor leisure pursuits.
“It is not surprising that golf courses on the flanks of the Pennines are sought after. They offer good quality, varied challenges and are a joy to play.
“The Pennines Golf Trail showcases five scenic courses in the foothills of the mountain spine, aiming to attract visitors from home and abroad who appreciate scenic beauty as they line up their putts.
“The trail has been designed so visitors can choose to play all the courses over a week, while enjoying some of the legendary northern hospitality along with some fine local cuisine.”
The new trail is the latest initiative of Golf Tourism England, a membership body launched last year to bring together English golf courses, tourism operators, accommodation providers and leisure attractions to jointly market the sport.
Golf Tourism England’s CEO, Andrew Cooke, said: “We have been pursuing a regional strategy of encouraging clusters of clubs to work together to create a golf tourism offering, and it is particularly pleasing that these five splendid courses from two different counties, naturally linked together by the Pennines, have decided to collaborate in such a positive way. Visiting golfers will be delighted by the quality of golf on offer and amazed by the value for money.”
