Rory McIlroy back to winning ways at the Wells Fargo

Last space for PGA Championship to be allocated

After 554 days, Rory McIlroy got back in the winner's circle with a commanding 5 stroke victory at the Wells Fargo Championship. It was his fourth career title at the Quail Hollow event and 26th PGA Tour title recording back-to-back PGA Tour wins.

McIlroy Irishman was four shots behind leader Xander Schauffele at the cut before closing to just one shot heading into the final 18 after a stunning third  round. The world number two kept the hammer down to close the event out, finishing at -17 with a -6 final round.

The World No 2 strongly sent a warning shot ahead of next week's PGA Championship where he'll look for his first major win in a decade at the site of his last triumph.

"Another great day to add to the rest" McIlroy said on the 18th green after recording his win. "It feels like the stars are aligning a little bit".
After a week of chaos with regard to his position on player committees and general administrative nastiness this will do more talking than his words.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Following Chris Gotterup's storming victory at the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic, which launchpads entry into the PGA next week, there is now just one spot to be allocated for the 156 man field at Valhalla starting Thursday.

Bettors will be absolutely spoiled for choice, with a massively in-form (but possibly less rested) Scottie Scheffler still the favourite. Brooks Koepka comes in off a LIV win, looking for his 6th major title, while McIlroy looks for number 5, at the most competitive field in golf.
