Nick Taylor wins WM Phoenix Open in play-off against Charley Hoffman
The event was as lively as ever
After opening the week with a course-record 60, Nick Taylor made three consecutive birdies with the tournament on the line Sunday to win his fourth PGA TOUR title.
Nick Taylor defeated Charley Hoffman with a birdie-3 on the second playoff hole (No. 18) to win the WM Phoenix Open in what was the 21st playoff in tournament history and the sixth in the last nine years.
Taylor picked up his fourth PGA TOUR win in his 260th start and becomes the first player since Tony Finau at the 2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta to win an event the year after finishing runner-up; in 2023, finished two strokes behind champion Scottie Scheffler.
Taylor, 35, birdied three of his last four regular holes to tie with Charley Hoffman on 21-under after the American took the lead with a seven-under-64.
Both birdied the first extra hole but when Hoffman missed on the second, Taylor sunk an 11-foot birdie putt.
The rest of the tournament had been marred by trouble at the notoriously raucous PGA Tour event.
