Australian Cam Davis holed from the greenside bunker for eagle at the penultimate hole and then birdied the last to force his way into a three-way playoff in which he prevailed to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic and his first PGA Tour victory.
“It’s the only reason I’m sitting here now,” Davis said afterwards. “To be honest, in my head, there wasn’t a thought of trying to hole it.”
Davis shot a closing five-under 67 to finish on eighteen-under-par alongside American Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann of Chile. Niemann was eliminated at the first extra hole when he failed to make par and when Merritt missed a six-foot putt for par at the fifth hole of the playoff, the title was the Australian’s.
“I just tried to put as much out of my mind as I could and just hit every shot for what it was worth,” Davis said.
“I guess I didn’t make any putts, but I kept on putting it in play, so it worked out all right.”
Sweden’s Alex Noren, who stormed through the field with his eight-under 64, had a share of the lead at one point but eventually had to settle for a share of fourth with American Hank Lebioda.
Bubba Watson was another man on the move on Sunday, briefly having a share of the lead, and his 64 gave him a sixteen-under total and tied for sixth with Brandon Hagy (68).
In form Irishman, Seamus Power closed with a 67 for a share of eight on fifteen-under with England’s Tom Lewis joint twenty-fifth on eleven-under.
