Surfs up at Quinta da Marinha
Golf and surfing - now you're talking
Words: John Dean
Five-star Hotel Quinta da Marinha, one of Europe's leading golf resorts, is encouraging people to take to the waves with a four-night surfing package.
The resort is located in Cascais, which is famed for its year-round surfing and is home to a vibrant surfing community, which started in the 1960s.
The location helps to create unique wind patterns, ideal for those looking to test themselves on a surfboard.
Lying just 19 miles west of Lisbon, the Atlantic Cascais coastline, from Carcavelos to Guincho, provides fantastic surfing for everybody from beginners to professionals and is widely regarded as the most spectacular piece of coastline in Portugal.
It regularly hosts professional surfing events - including the Cascais Trophy, part of the World Surf League - as its mix of environments provides for beach breaks, point and reef breaks.
Hotel Quinta da Marinha has long been a haunt for many of the world's top surfers and has welcomed previously the likes of the Australian former world champion Mark Occhilupo and the USA's Garrett McNamara, who broke the world record for the largest wave ever surfed, at Nazaré, just 65 miles up the coast from Cascais.
Quinta da Marinha's ‘Surf Experience' package starts from just €400 per person and includes four nights' B&B accommodation, with three six-hour surf days - with a surf lesson, surfboard, wetsuit, insurance, and refreshments and snacks - access to the resort's swimming pool and health club, private parking and transfers to and from the hotel and beach.
The resort's sales director, João Pinto Coelho, explained: "Surfing is the second most popular sport in Cascais, behind football, as we have all sorts of waves here from small, for beginners, to massive breakers for the pros. What's more it's the only place in Europe where it is possible to surf all year round.
"Our new ‘Surf Experience' package is perfect for those who wish to learn the sport, while retaining all of the luxuries one expects from a five-star resort. Only then, once you've achieved a level of competency, do you need to buy a VW Campervan," he smiled.
Hotel Quinta da Marinha Resort has 198 air-conditioned rooms, each with a spacious balcony and panoramic views of either the Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course or the Sintra mountains. We say surf in the morning, and golf in the afternoon.
