"Summer of Golf" run by Provision Events and Sefton Council helping to "Grow the game"
“Growing the game” has become the recent buzz phrase to enter golf. The aim is really quite simple but it often takes a lot of hard work in order to actually make it happen. We all remember how we fell in love with the game, It could have been the first ever time you held a club and struck a ball. The only problem is making the game accessible to as many people as possible.
With The Open Championship being held at Royal Birkdale, it is great to see initiatives like “The Summer of Golf” at the heart of the Southport. Sefton Council has teamed up with Provision Events to bring the game to everyone.
There is so much on offer including PGA lessons, bunker challenges, longest putt and even a longest drive simulator. For the fans of Rick Shiels and Peter Finch, you also get the chance for some masterclasses from them. The event is free for anyone to attend and it was a privilege to see so many people of all ages, some of whom are gaining their first golfing experience, having such a great time.
Simon Jones from Provision Events told GolfPunk: “We’ve been very busy and there is nothing better than seeing people pick up a club for the time and love it. We have even had Soren Kjeldsen turn up with his children .”
If “growing the game” is the intention then it has certainly had the desired effect. However, this is also the culmination of a collaboration between the council and Provision Events.
Simon Jones acknowledged this collaboration by saying: “Sefton Council have been amazing. They have worked so hard to make this all possible. The response we have had from the public has been nothing short of fantastic.”
Seeing so many children and their parents enjoying themselves makes it all worthwhile. If this the future of “growing the game” then long may it last.
