Paige Spiranac made her Ladies European Tour debut at the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters this morning. While we would love to say she was at the top, the sponsor's invite was propping up the field, having shot a first round five over 77, 11 shots behind the lead.
“I am so glad to have it out of the way.I wouldn’t say I was dreading this, but certainly was nervous and anxious thinking about this for the last couple of months. So, to have it kind of over, it’s a relief and I am really excited about my second round".
Spiranac, who was given the chance to play because of her growing social media presence, didn’t embarrass herself on her pro debut, but it looks like she found the LET a bit of a step-up in playing standard.
With shaking hands she snap hooked it down the first: "My short game kept me going in the first part of the round and towards the end, I started to get my rhythm back and hit some pretty good golf shots. Hopefully, I can carry that over to the second round and just play how I know I am capable of playing."
Paige only made one birdie all round but had this to say: "Please be nice to me. I know a 77 is not the best score, but I broke 80, and I know people were putting bets on it. They were saying I wasn’t going to, so at least I got that going for me!”
In a golfing battle of Swingin’ Siren superpowers, our favourite new US Swingin’ Siren was playing with our favourite Russian Swingin’Siren, Maria Balikoeva. Maria shot a 74 to beat Paige by three shots, but both need to buck their ideas up if they want to be playing at the weekend.
Paige does look to be relaxed this week. It’s a big step up in standard, but if she doesn’t embarrass herself she can expect more starts around the world next season. Let’s see if the internet sensation can improve over the weekend so we get to see more of her and her ridiculous flop shot next year...
