Hideki Matsuyama makes history

As first ever Japanese golfer to rank second in the world

Hideki Matsuyama has made history by becoming the first Japanese golfer ever to rank second in the world.

Up to this point in time, no Japanese or Asian golfer has ever made it into the Top 5, so this is a major break through for Asia.

Dustin Johnson still leads by 144.85 points, so there is no immediate threat to his No 1 position.

Matsuyama achieved these new heights by coming second at the US Open at Erin Hills two weeks ago.

25–year–old Matsuyama has now won four–times on the PGA Tour and eight–times on the Japanese.

An early season victory at the Phoenix Open in February propelled him to 5th in world, and his US Open performance has given him a further boost.

He will be making his European Tour debut at the Irish Open at Portstewart, which will be part of his links golf preparation for The Open at Royal Birkdale. Strong performances there, and at the Firestone, and Dustin could feel him breathing down his neck.
