Brooke Henderson Super Happy
As she bags 4th LPGA victory
Words: GolfPunk
It was clearly a great weekend for anyone called Brooke or Brooks. First Koepka bags his 1st major then Brooke Henderson claimed her fourth LPGA Tour title at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give, and is "Super happy."
Brooke Henderson has won her fourth LPGA Tour title at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give.
Henderson had Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson on her tail all day, carded a bogey–free 3–under–par 66.
The par–5 5th hole had to converted to a par 3 because of standing water in the fairway.
“Just super excited right now,” said Henderson. “I played really steady golf today, and that putt on No.16 was really huge. Especially looking back now, it’s even bigger than what I thought it was. It’s really cool to be able to make those putts under pressure. The leaderboard is packed. There are so many great names up there, so to finish on top is really exciting."
Henderson hit 11 of 12 fairways and missed only two greens all day.
“It was really tough today. To shoot 3–under and I don't think I had any bogeys today either, which was great. The wind really picked up. I was kind of surprised when I looked at the leaderboard and I had a two–shot lead on the 18th green,” she said. “Super happy and I'm just glad it's done and I finally have my fourth win.”
It was, of course, father's day, and there was a little more motivation for Brookes.
“This morning (my Dad) said, ‘Do it for me,’ so this is definitely for him. He's my coach, my best friend and a great father, so thank you, Dad!”
Michelle Wie finished tied for second with Lexi Thompson, and had her best finish of the season. Her round was bogey free, and she made four birdies on her front nine. But she just could not get it going on her back nine and made pars from the 9th to the 18th to finish four shots back.
“It was tough out there,” said Wie. “The wind just started blowing and it was just interesting. Some spots are really wet, some spots are dry, but overall I felt like I played good this week and I’m happy about it.”
Lexi Thompson had the opportunity to tie Henderson’s score at 17–under but she had to drain her approach from the fairway on the 72nd hole, and that was just too much. It's a frustrating time for Lexi, as she lost in a play off at the Manulife LPGA Classic last week. She's so close, but needs to finish her dinner.
Since winning on Sunday Brooke Henderson has done the seemingly impossible in her young career on the LPGA Tour, becoming a two–time winner in the span of just 24 hours.
After her victory at the Meijer LPGA Classic, Henderson headed to Rhode Island along with Gerina Piller, Lexi Thompson, Morgan Pressel, Paula Creamer and Cristie Kerr to compete in Monday’s CVS Health Charity Classic.
Six members of the LPGA Tour teed it up alongside members of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour CHAMPIONS to raise money for charities across New England.
Henderson played alongside Keegan Bradley, who won last year, as well as Tournament co–host Billy Andrade, and the trio pulled out another victory at 15-under par.
