Reigning U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick defeats defending champion Jordan Spieth in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage, earning his second career PGA Tour title.
The lead swapped between overnight leader Fitzpatrick and Spieth throughout Sunday's tense final round, while their playing partner and 2022 runner-up Patrick Cantlay gradually fell out of contention and eventually finished third on -16.
Both players finished on 17 under at Harbour Town after Fitzpatrick, who missed promising birdie putts on the last two holes, carded a three-under 68 to come out on top of a strong field, along with Spieth.
Spieth, who shot a 66, missed two gilt-edged opportunities to putt to win on the first two play-off holes, however Fitzpatrick held his nerve and birdied the third to win.
Spieth becomes the first defending champion to lose in a playoff since Schauffele at the 2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions and now has 18 runner-up finishes on tour since the start of the 2013 season, four more than any other player in that span.
Fitzpatrick become only the second player from England to win the RBC Heritage and first since Nick Faldo in 1984. Not only does he take home an impressive $3.6 million, he also moves from No. 16 to No. 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking, the highest position of his career.
"It's a course I dreamed of playing when I was young," said Fitzpatrick.

"I managed to play it a couple of times with my dad and this one means more than anything," the 28-year-old told Sky Sports.
"Of every single one on the calendar, this is the one that I would want to win the most."
Masters champion Jon Rahm carded a 68 to finish on 11 under along with England's Tommy Fleetwood (71). Tyrrell Hatton shot 66 to get to 10 under, while compatriot Justin Rose hit a 70 which left him on nine under, rounding out an impressive tournament for the English players.
