Team GB agonisingly close as Scheffler clinches Olympic gold

Sensational Scottie Scheffler shoots course equalling record on final day

Team USA secure another gold medal, as Scottie Scheffler continues year of pure dominance in the men's game.

On a thrilling final day at Le Golf National, Scheffler shoots 9 under to pip Team GB's Tommy Fleetwood leaving him to settle for the silver medal.

In an enthralling finale, Fleetwood was tied with the clubhouse leader at 19 under heading to the 17th tee. A disappointing approach shot saw Tommy miss the green, and after an overhit chip he made bogey to put himself back into the 2nd place. Par up the last would secure him the silver medal.

Coming from 4 shots back after 54 holes, Scheffler's astonishing, course record equalling, final round of 62 consisted of 6 birdies on the back nine to finish the weekend at 19 under par.

This finish means the continuation of an amazing year for Scottie, adding to a plethora of PGA titles and his second green jacket from Augusta back in April. This one clearly felt special as he attempted to hold back tears atop the podium.

The bronze medal went to Japanese golf hero, Hideki Matsuyama, he was in the mix on the back nine until a string of 6 pars saw him close out for a 6 under 65, just one back of Fleetwood's silver.

Always seeming to be in contention, but not quite getting the job done on the big stage saw Ireland's Rory McIlroy finish in a tied 5th place with Spanish Jon Rahm.

Close to a home Olympic games medal was Victor Perez, shooting a brave 63 final round, but only being good enough for 4th place.
