PGA Championship Returns to Oak Hill
Major event returns to new york venue for third time
Triple 3’s, 3 is the magic number, third-time lucky, or three’s a crowd? Whatever your opinion on the number three, the PGA Championship will return to the Oak Hill Country Club in 2023 for the first time since 2013, before that, 2003.
One of the golfing calendar's most major events for the last century is returning to New York in 2023. The PGA Championship was first played at the Oak Hill Country Club in 2003; it then made a second appearance in 2013 and will arrive once again in 2023 for the 105th edition of the tournament. The festivities begin on May 15; the action will commence on May 18 and end on May 21, 2023.
“This is one of the pre-eminent, historical golf places in America, with the events that have been played here and who has played here,” said Barry Deach, championship director for the PGA.
Undoubtedly, the PGA’s history at Oak Hill is something that Rochester can be proud of. In 1968, Lee Trevino won the U.S. Open. In 1980, Jack Nicklaus dominated the Oak Hill grass and collected the PGA Championship. And, of course, Curtis Strange made history when collecting back-to-back U.S. Open titles for the first time in 38 years when he won the 1989 Oak Hill event.
And it doesn’t stop there. The 1995 Ryder Cup delivered a history-making weekend for the European team. Europe was down to the U.S. by two points, but a late comeback saw the Europeans win the event for the first time after trailing after two days.
Add the Senior PGA Championships from 2008 and 2019 into the mix and the U.S. Amateur event in 1998. You’ll understand how Oak Hill will forever live in the professional golfing history books as one of the most notable locations.
2023 and beyond
When the tour returns to Rochester, New York, in 2023, more memories and fanatics will be created.
Already, sales for the event prove that NY and surrounding areas are excited about the tournament's return. Despite the United State’s battle with inflation, corporate hospitality sales have arrived in bunches. In addition, large suites sold out before the end of March.
“Because of the pandemic, there’s a pent-up demand for people to get back to some kind of fun and celebration,” Deach commented. “We’re seeing the impact of that.”
However, Oak Hill isn’t the only establishment that should prepare for the PGA’s arrival. New York Bets app should expect a plethora of golfing wagers to run through their system. PGA enthusiasts love testing their predictions at major events, and the PGA Championship is no exception.
However, while the betting odds obviously won’t see a release until 2023, golf handicappers will have to wager on alternative events until the PGA returns to New York in 2023.
There will be some added changes for fans at Oak Hill. Since 1969, PGA Championship events have been held in August. However, this month was changed to May in 2019.
“It’s the No.1 participation month in golf; it’s one of the greatest months in golf across the country,” Deach commented.
And because this area of New York and locations to the West are filled with golf enthusiasts, the overall interest is heightened because of the returning PGA Championship.
“There are a lot of golfers within this region; we know that we study that, we have the data that supports it,” Deach added.
The PGA of America often attempts to expand the game through many avenues. With the tournament commencing in May, it will give extra opportunities and a natural boost in unison with springtime happiness.
The evolution of the game’s expansion includes the experience of the course. Similar to how the NFL has hosted a multitude of events during Super Bowl week, the PGA is starting to focus on more than just hosting a golf tournament.
Oak Hill will present a merchandise shop the size of a football field.
“When you see the championship shops from a design standpoint and a merchandise selection standpoint, it’s extraordinary,” Deach said. “It’s a one-in-a-lifetime luxury shopping experience. That’s part of the memory if you will.”
