Records were being broken off the course rather than on it at the Waste Management Phoenix Open this weekend. Over 600,000 people came. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
On Saturday 201,003 people came and watched the golf, which is a staggering number, especially given that the city of Phoenix only has a population of 1.3 million, and Scottsdale itself a tiny 217,385. That’s a lot of golf fans per head of population!
Saturday’s attendance was well up on the previous Saturday record of 189,722 set in 2014.
Sunday’s attendance of 65,330 pushed the total attendance to 618,365 people, well ahead of last year’s previous record attendance of 564,368. Friday also saw a record attendance of 160,415.
The good people of Phoenix have created an absolute monster of an event, and with the momentum it now has we think it’s only going to get bigger.
And it’s good value too, with general admission on Thursday $30 and $40 dollars for the final three days. The Monday and Tuesday are also free of charge.
They’re onto something! We love it.
