Victory for GB&I in the 28th PGA Cup
As they trounce US 16-10
Words: GolfPunk
We may have been trounced in both the Walker Cup and the Solheim Cup, but there was some sweet revenge for GB&I in the 28th PGA Cup held at Fox Hills Club & Resort this weekend.
The Sunday singles proved decisive for GB&I as nine of its ten-team members scored points to take the team to a 16-10 victory over the United States.
GB&I started the day with just a single point advantage, but they soon had points on the board with wins for former European Tour stars Damien McGrane and Robert Coles in the top two matches.
It was to be the most points that GB&I have ever scored against the U.S. since the PGA Cup began in 1973, and it was the first successful defense of the Llandudno International Trophy since 1984.
The singles performance matched the Sunday in 2013, with GB&I dominating 7½ - 2½.
Rich Berberian Jr. of Hooksett, New Hampshire, the 2016 PGA Professional Champion and PGA Professional Player of the Year, was the only American to win a singles match. He went 7-under par through 15 holes, including two eagles, to beat England’s Chris McDonnell, 4 and 3.
The U.S. is 17-7-4 in the series, and 6-6-1 on the road in the leading international competition for PGA Club Professionals.
