University golf team banned from playing Doral
Trump backlash from Catholic college
Words: James Greenwood
Donald Trump's presidential campaign continues to cause problems for his Trump National Doral Miami golf resort. Now a local university has weighed in.
Barry University, a Miami based Catholic school, has officially banned its men's golf team from practicing at Trump's courses.
"As a practice, Barry University does not engage in business relationships where senior leadership of a company takes a public position or the company’s guiding principles are antithetical to the university’s core commitments of Inclusive Community and/or Social Justice," Vice President for Institutional Advancement and External Affairs Sara Herald told Campus Reform, a college news site.
"This practice, which has been in place for some time, is not political, as we do not take positions relative to candidates. We seek only to ensure fulfillment of our values through our institutional business-related ventures and expenditures."
Formerly known as the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, the Trump organization bought the resort out of bankruptcy in 2012. The resort boasts five golf courses, with The Blue Monster being home to the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Barry University is one of the largest Catholic universities in the Southeast, and the Trump campaign has had notably difficult relations with the church.
