59s seem to be all the rage these days on the PGA Tour but there has never been a 59 on the European Tour. There very nearly was, and probably should have been one, yesterday...
Tom Lewis looked set to make history after playing the first 13 holes at the Made In Denmark championship in a staggering -12. But three late bogeys destroyed his chances.
Lewis, 25, equaled the course record of 62 in Farso, but it might not equate to much of a consolation.
"Maybe I thought too much or tried too hard, hence the finish," said Lewis.
That was yesterday and, as we all know, golf can be a real git of a game at times. Today he shot a +1 72. I mean, what's that all about?
In other news, Thomas Pieters, in contention for one of the three wild cards for the European Ryder Cup team (which will be announced next week) partnered Europe's Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke.
"I did all I could in front of Darren. He has a lot on his mind other than golf and we will just have to wait and see," he said.
Go, on Darren, give the Belgian Bomber Mark2 a go, it worked last time in Medinah with Nick C!
*59 called a Gieberger after Al Gieberger became the first man to shoot 59 (-13) in a PGA Tour sanctioned event during the second round of the Danny THomas Memphis CLassic in 1977.
