Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen set a new course record to take command of the Turkish Airlines Open.
Olesen had eight birdies and an eagle in a 62 to reach the halfway stage of the £5.7million event on 15 under-par, six shots clear of Spain's Adrian Otaegui and Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee.
It’s the first time that the tournament is being staged at the Regnum Carya Golf Resort & Spa
With the Regnum Carya Golf Resort & Spa hosting the tournament for the first time, and course records were tumbling.
Spain’s Adrian Otaegui's 63 had earlier bettered the course record established by first-round leader George Coetzee, who shot a 64, before Thorbjorn reduced it by another stroke.
Meanwhile Danny Willett shot a disappointing 74 to end the half way stage a whole 16 shots off the lead.
Willett needs to finish outright fifth or better if he is to reclaim the top spot in the Race to Dubai from Henrik Stenson, but he’s now T58 in a 78–player field.
Olesen won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last year, but the wheels fell of his season and he missed seven cuts out of 10 starts. At just 24 he’s still a real prospect and should be a contender for the next Ryder Cup.
