This Week's Big Bets

The Golf Spiv shows us the way to beat the bookies this week...

GolfPunt- Week 4, WGC Bridgestone Invitational

The Golf Spiv is 60.77 Points UP through three weeks, after Super Swede David Lingmerth places at The Quicken Loans National.

This week sees the return of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational on the South Course at Firestone Country Club. The course, a par 70, plays 7,400 yards, and has been tinkered with by some of the finest designers in the land. Robert Trent Jones remodelled the track in 1960, whilst Jack Nicklaus modernised it somewhat in 1986.

Given the length and par combination, it doesn’t take much of a genius to work out there are some long par 4’s round here, and length off the tee is certainly important. That said, when scrolling through the database, the archives actually point to more of a rounded stats player as well as the good old “bomber” type.

So we are looking at greens in regulation, driving distance, shots gained tee to green, and ultimately all rounder stats, as pointed out by many a shrewd tipster. The last handful of winners have come out as 1st in all round stats to win this.

Given the cash on offer this week, they all want to win this.

The Shortlist-

Louis Oosthuizen - whilst the stats make him a choice, his record in the US isn’t exactly stand out, with the only notable being a loss in a playoff to Bubba at the 2012 Masters. Not one for me then, despite the mildly attractive 25-1 on offer.

Dustin Johnson - 16-1, general, 1 point each way- bomber!

Hideki Matsuyama - 28-1, if he gets the putter going, he could well be the bet of the week. 1 point each way.

Patrick Reed - 45-1 - 0.5 points each way.

Adam Scott - 25-1, bombs it miles, and has won this event before, hitting a bit of form in the bigger events of late- enough said. 1 point each way.

Jason Day - whilst normally I like a big price punt, this week I’m struggling to find too much to get really excited about, although I do have a couple of darts to throw (see below). Jason Day is in hot form again, and is very hard to ignore. His length off the tee and aggressive nature is a deadly combo when he’s on his game. 14-1 (general) gets my money, 1 point each way.

First Round Leader

JB Holmes - 80-1 Ladbrokes - 0.5 points each way

Total Investment this week- 10 points
