The Weekend Highlights
Pieters and Reed win when they need to
Words: Daniel Owen
Talk about cometh the hour and all that jazz! Thomas Pieters missed out on automatic Ryder Cup selection, but winning the Made in Denmark, having played the first two rounds with Captain Darren Clarke could just be enough to sneak him into the team.
"It's all about winning tournaments. I'm really happy with this one. That was one of my goals, to just have one every year, just so you know you're improving and you can win. That's very important. I'm very, very happy.
"He (Clarke) has got plenty of good players to pick from, so if he doesn't pick me, then so be it and I'll work my butt off to get there in the next one. But I've done all I can now and I'm just really pleased with this win to be honest."
Birdieing the last three holes to win by one from Bradley Dredge shows true grit. He finished 9th in the European points list, 11th in the World list. He absolutely bombs it off the tee as well, so could be a good match up for some of the big hitting Americans. If it was up to us we'd put him in the side.
But he wasn't the only player who put in a performance to get into the Ryder Cup yesterday. Take a bow Patrick Reed. Winning the Barclays despite burying it in the face of a fairway bunker on the 18th at Bethpage Black was a solid performance to guarantee the Ryder Cup spot. Reed shot up to fourth in the Ryder Cup rankings and joins Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Brandt Snedeker and Zach Johnson in the USA Ryder Cup squad.
Rickie Fowler managed to play himself of the Ryder cup team with a 39 on the back 9, making a double and two bogeys in his last four holes. A terrible finish, we still think Rickie will make the side once Captain Love makes his four picks.
