R&A switches to $$$ for The Open prize fund

With a total of $10.25 million to be won

The R&S has announced that the winner of the 144th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale will win $US1.84 million from a total prize fund of $US10.25million.

The R&A’s CEO Martin Slumbers commented today: "We are operating in an increasingly global marketplace and have made the decision to award the prize fund in US dollars in recognition of the fact that it is the most widely adopted currency for prize money in golf.”

The winner’s prize was £1.175 million for Royal Troon in 2016, which at today’s exchange rate would be $1,517,8238.

The prize money has therefore risen by £253,000, which is the biggest in the championship’s history.

It is still short of the US Open winner’s prize as Brooks Koepka won $2.16 million, but that did not come with a Claret Jug attached.
