“I didn’t get off to a very good start,” Tiger Woods said with a smile.

“I’ve been playing well,” Woods said. “That’s the thing, I’ve been hitting the golf ball well. My putting has been good. I just stayed patient. It’ll turn if I stay patient, which I did.”

Woods played three practice rounds at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club this week, which he said he doesn’t normally do.

“I felt like I hit the ball well enough to actually turn it around,” Woods said. “But it was nice to actually turn it around.”

Tiger finished on 3-under, five behind the leaders but still in contention in the low scoring conditions in Virginia.

The field took advantage of the soft conditions at the Quicken Loans National.

Rickie Fowler, the second-highest ranked golfer in the field, finished his round with a hole in one on the 9th to get to 4 under. The defending champion and top-ranked golfer in the tournament, Justin Rose, posted a 5-under 66.

Compatriot Andy Sullivan is the best-placed Brit on six-under-par. The 29-year-old has risen to 53rd in the world this year after victories at the South African Open and the Joburg Open. And also obviously after visiting us at the GP Clubhouse at The Open in St Andrews.

Tiger needs to win this week, to secure his place next week at the Bridgestone Invitational.
