Words: Daniel Owen
Forget Tyson Fury. Say hello to the real heavyweight champion of the world. Joe Miller is the new World Long Drive Champion.
On a day where the media is talking about a champion giving up his belts, Londoner Joe Miller went out and won his. Progressing through the 80 man field a the World Long Drive Championship, Miller hit a 439 yard bomb in the semi finals to progress against Justin Moose.
In the quarters he hit one just the 437 yards to beat Mitch Dobbyn.
Miller won the event in 2010. For a long time he has been considered the best in the sport along with Jamie Sadlowski, but neither man could win the title in recent years. Sadlowski retired earlier this season to concentrate on tournament golf, and Joe Miller came to the final in the form of his life. Up against Ryan Steenberg in the final, Miller had the swing speed and ball speed advantage. But he needed to get it in the grid, something he has struggled with at times.
That is phenomenal driving. Look at these back swing positions. That's inhuman to be that strong and flexible!
"A real honor to be standing here," Miller said as he received his Happy Gilmore sized cheque for $125,000, and wrestling style title championship belt. Asked if he wanted this title more than his first world championship, that he won in 2010, he replied, "Yeah I did, I think. It's been building up since 2010."
We've seen Miller up close and it's like nothing you've ever seen before. Even compared to other big hitters he has another gear. Well done Joe. You've got to be favourite to retain next year now...
