Words: GolfPunk
1991 Masters winner, Ian ‘Woosie’ Woosnam OBE, will continue his 2018 Staysure Tour season as he is confirmed to return to Birmingham’s Forest of Arden Marriott Hotel & Country Club between 4-7 October. Playing in the annual Farmfoods European Senior Masters, Woosie will join returning tournament host, Peter Baker.
The professional golfer from Oswestry, on the Welsh boarder, Woosnam has an illustrious career under his belt, including playing eight times consecutively as part of Europe’s Ryder Cup team and captaining them to victory in 2006 as Captain.
It was this win which saw Woosnam awarded an OBE for his contribution to golf the following year, in the 2007 New Year’s Honours List. Further confirming his huge contribution to the sport, Woosnam was announced as an addition to the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 and most recently the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017.
Last year the Farmfoods European Senior Masters made its debut on the Staysure Tour calendar and saw three-time European Tour winner, Stephen Dodd, take home the inaugural title. Taking place from 4-7 October, the Arden Course puts professionals to the test as they compete for the €200,000 prize fund.
Returning as tournament host, is three-time European Tour winner Peter Baker, who also took on the role of Vice-Captain in Woosie’s 2006 Ryder Cup team. Speaking of Ian’s return to the Farmfoods European Senior Masters, Baker said:
“As a fellow Ryder Cup player, and close friend, I have had the personal pleasure of playing alongside Woosie on courses around the world, many times, and it is fantastic news that he will once again play at this event. He always brings a competitive edge to the game and a player of his history will bring in more spectators and increase the profile of the three-day event.”
Baker added:
“The Farmfoods European Senior Masters relies on top professionals supporting the event, and if last year is anything to go by, 2018 will be bigger and better than before. Woosie is just one of the stellar players taking on the course this year and I can’t wait to find out who else will be announced soon!”
More professional players will be announced in the coming weeks as the anticipation for the event continues to grow.
