Horse racing & golf
If you like both this could be for you
Words: John Dean
Oadby golf course in Leicestershire is on the market and the owner, Leicester Racecourse, is looking for someone to take it off their hands.
The course closed in 2012 after Oadby and Wigston Borough Council stopped subsidizing it.
The 18-hole course, which has been leased to the council by Leicester Racecourse for nearly 40 years, had cost taxpayers in the borough more than £533,000 since 2005.
The site has a 25- year lease, which will cost £30,000-a-year to service.
Racecourse GM Rob Bracken said the site would need work, and the new owners would have to find new revenue streams for the venue.
"We've looked into the possibility of holding music and camping festivals there," said Rob. "Like the Latitude festival, which would fund the upkeep of the site. At the minute it's just my own personal golf course, so it would be lovely to get it back up and running again."
Rob said the racecourse had been maintaining the site, but it was not ready for use as a golf course.
"It'll take about a year to get it back up to scratch," he said. "This won't be a quick turn."
Oadby golf course is a 106 acres site, which includes a 43-acre section, with nine holes, located within the racecourse circuit itself so at least it can’t be turned into houses.
So, if you have a passion for golf, music festivals and horse racing, how about having a crack?
