Hillside GC gets £1 million revamp
Ahead of the 2017 Open

A transformation of Hillside Golf Club in Southport is set for completion this month, just in time for The Open.
The club will host official hospitality on behalf of the R&A for the 146th Open Golf Championship taking place at neighbouring Royal Birkdale this summer, and has seen extensive renovations, refurbishments and extensions over the last 18 months.
Club secretary at Hillside, Chris Williams, said that the £1million makeover provides members and guests with facilities that complement the world class links course.
He said: “For the last 18 months we have worked closely with Mason Lord and RAL Architects to fulfil a project that has been in the pipeline for a number of years.
“The facilities and overall look of the clubhouse have been revolutionised and the board’s investment will provide a lasting legacy for members and visitors for years to come.
“Our enhanced function room has enabled us to form a joint venture with the R&A to provide official hospitality for the 2017 Open in a unique environment that lies only 400 yards from Royal Birkdale’s 18th green.
“Southport and England’s Golf Coast attract visitors from all over the world and it is important that our course and facilities are the best they can be.”
Over 800 hospitality guests are expected to attend during the Open, which takes place at Royal Birkdale this year from July 20 to 23.
Director of Mason Lord, Paul Barrow, said: “The building is over 100 years old and of course has been changed over the years.
This meant that, architecturally, the initial challenge was bringing the external form of the building together, so that now the different features complement each other, as though it was all built at the same time.
“We carried out the project in two phases. The first phase was the refurbishment of the ground floor function area and the creation of a first floor terrace with spectacular views overlooking the 18th hole.
“The second phase was the renovation and extension of the upper floor, including the creation of an extended area for functions, which is supported by a new commercial kitchen.”
Paul added: “It feels like a really high–end environment now. The terrace will undoubtedly be a popular feature for guests at The Open this summer.
“It offers a nice and pleasant aspect with stunning views of the course.
“But beyond The Open, the renovations and the new commercial kitchen means the club will now be an attractive venue for all different kinds of events.
“Hillside definitely compares with some of the other famous courses in the North West.”
