Half of clubs offering no help to members
GolfPunk survey is not great reading
Words: GolfPunk
We have had a great response to our survey of club members, but the results so far do not paint many golf clubs in a great light. Over half of the respondents told us that their club had not offered any form of reduction or deferral during the COVID-19 crisis.

However, it is not all bad news as it seems that some clubs are appreciating it is a difficult time for their members. 25% of clubs are not demanding fees at this time and 32% have offered some form of reduction or deferral.
Half of the clubs are offering some form reduction, deferral or other forms of assistance but half are offering nothing.
The comments received in the survey show a variety of attitudes with some very happy to continue paying a full subscription despite the lack of golf.
“Clubs need every penny. If you value your club want it to be there on the other side and can afford it. Keep paying subs. It's not just about golf; it’s about a place I have been a member for over 20 years.”
For others, the lack of response from the club has not pleased them and they will be voting with their feet.
“I will be leaving my club to join a more progressive and understanding one.”
A theme running through the survey replies is the lack of appreciation that members may be struggling financially and this backs up the point made in GolfPunk’s recent article on the subject. This angry comment sums up how many are feeling
“Appalling behaviour by my club. Not even a hint of acknowledgement that Members might be suffering financially at this time. It’s all about what’s right for the club. Not right at all! My gym and London clubs are pausing their membership fees, so why not my Golf Club too. And I bet my Club Secretary hasn’t had to take a salary cut! I’ve taken a 100% salary cut in April so my company can survive. My club has behaved disgracefully.”

Appreciating that many clubs may not be financially able to offer a large reduction in fees it does seem that some are making an effort.
“Offered 15 months for the price of 12”
“My club is offering 15 months for the price of 12 starting when the first golf ball is struck after lockdown. But you have to renew by 1st May.”
“A price freeze for the next 3 years if paid before due date and money back at the bar.”
One comment received demonstrates the point that this COVID-19 could be the final nail in the coffin for some clubs.
“Supposed to be looking at sorting something but over 100 members not rejoined and start with a £91k debt.”
Hopefully, clubs will wake up and realise that they have to think about the financial position of their members and start to adapt to the changing market place. As we have said before for many in the post COVID-19 world it will be adapt or die!
