Evening eight golf at Westerwood
Here's an interesting format to try
Words: GolfPunk
Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort, near Glasgow, is reintroducing its ‘Evening Eights’ competition, which proved so popular with members and visitors last summer.
The competition is an eight-hole Stableford competition on holes one and 12 to 18. And, in a unique twist, to encourage quick play, anybody completing their round in under an hour-and-a-half is rewarded with a bonus Stableford point.
What’s more, participants – both members and visitors – can also enjoy a free post-round beer or soft drink. Members are able to play at any time during the day, while visitors may tee off any time between 5 and 8pm, subject to availability. Weekly prizes are on offer for the best score until the end of September.
The cost of a round in the ‘Evening Eights’ is £6 for a member and just £10 for visitors.
Daryn Cochrane, golf operations manager at the Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort, explained: “Last year we introduced the ‘Evening Eights’ because of the prevalence of time pressure on golfers – and it proved popular beyond our expectations.
“As last year, the league format will run until the end of September, with the top eight in the table heading into a knockout format for the honour of being crowned ‘Evening Eights’ champion. But the opportunity is also there for people to put themselves in the frame for the weekly prizes – and, of course, to have fun and stay fit in the process.”
The Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort – managed by Redefine|BDL Hotels (RBH), the UK’s leading hotel management company – is situated in acres of spectacular grounds, with a golf course co-designed by one of the world’s greatest golfers: Severiano Ballesteros.
Working with the equally revered golf designer Dave Thomas, the legendary Spaniard created a course that is as challenging as it is beautiful, as it meanders through silver birches, firs and heather, offering stunning views towards the picturesque Campsie Hills.
The signature hole, the par-three 15th – created by Ballesteros and known as the Waterfall hole – requires a tee-shot from an elevated tee to a green surrounded by a 60ft rock face. It’s not for the faint hearted and nor are the undulating moorland greens which test one’s mettle when standing over those nervy four-foot putts.
Yet with 148 spacious bedrooms, a large health club with a magnificent swimming pool and gym, a relaxing spa, fantastic bars and restaurants, guests may never leave the comfort of the hotel.
As the largest golf resort operator in the UK, RBH manages 10 championship and tournament golf courses across the UK, hosting events from the European Tour, European Seniors Tour, Ladies European Tour and the PGA.
