Cameroon Davis wins Australian Open

But how did Jason Day and Jordan Spieth get on?

Cameron Davis has won the Emirates Australian Open champion.

22-year-old Davis from Sydney went low with a 64, the lowest round of the day by three shots, to post a tournament winning 11 under.

He then had a long wait on the practice range as the players behind him tried to match his score.

The closest was Sweden’s Jonas Blixt, who hit his third shot at the par-five 18th to the fringe of the green, just four metres beyond the cup with a chance to force a playoff.

But Blixt left his birdie roll a few centimetres short, and had to settle for T2 with Matt Jones, from Sydney.

Everything looked to have been set fair for Jason Day, the overnight leader by one shot, but he could not get it going, and shot a two-over par 73 to finish fifth.

Cameroon Davis becomes the youngest Australian winner since Aaron Baddeley in 2000 when he won it as a 19 year old, and will pocket $225,000 for his first ever victory.

“It’s a little bit numb at the moment, I think,’’ he said. “I just didn’t expect to be in this situation. Even though I had a great round, I just didn’t think I was going to be far enough up the leaderboard. But to finish my round and see where everyone was at, I was kind of surprised. I’m just relieved right now. That’s all I can say.’’

Davis also earns himself a place in the Open Championship at Carnoustie, as do Matt Jones and Jonas Blixt.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth finished with an eagle to come in eighth in his title defence. But he is not exactly going away empty handed, as he was richly rewarded with  a $1 million appearance fee.
