Aston Villa’s ex Sporting Director moves into golf
Hendrik Almstadt joins European Tour
Words: James Greenwood
German Hendrik Almstadt joined Aston Villa from Arsenal to become the club’s first ever Sporting Director in July of last year. Almstadt had worked with then Villa chief executive Tom Fox at Arsenal and was set to play a big role in player recruitment.
But after a disaster season in the Premiership both Almstadt and Fox have left. Almstadt left by mutual consent in March after an internal review, and he was clearly blamed for the players who were recruited in the summer and did not perform.
Two months after leaving Aston Villa it was confirmed that Almstadt has now moved sports to golf.
The European Tour confirmed yesterday that Almstadt has been appointed the director of player relations, and he seems well happy with the move.
“I am excited to join The European Tour and Keith Pelley’s management team at such a crucial stage of the Tour’s development.
“I’m passionate about developing sporting organisations, creating frameworks for high performance and working with individual athletes.
“This role is all about the players and I believe that much of my experience in football and business will be valuable for this post. I can’t wait to get started.”
It’s an interesting change of roles and games for that matter. We wish him well in his new role.
