Arrested Development Headline
At Commercial Bank Qatar Masters
Words: John Dean
Double Grammy award-winning hip-hoppers Arrested Development are the new headliners for Friday 29th January at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
Simple Minds were originally scheduled to be the main act, but for reasons unknown they have pulled out.
Arrested Development became the first hip-hop act to receive the “best new artist” Grammy award, and the award for “best rap single” in one year. Their album 3 Years 5 Months and 2 Days in the life of, sold more than four million copies. This was all back in 1993, believe it or not – 23 years ago.
That said they are a whole lot more modern than Simple Minds, who formed back in 1977 at the end of the Punk era, so Arrested Development have 11 years on the original headliners who, if truth be told, we thought had disbanded eons ago. Arrested Development formed originally in 1988, with 1992 being their breakthrough year.
The Atlanta-based hip-hop revolutionaries will be playing a set list that includes songs such as Tennesse, Revolution and Mr Wendell.
Revolution found fame on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s Malcom X, which starred Denzel Washington, who was also nominated for an Oscar – a far cry from this year’s Oscar debacle.
Anyway, we are glad to see that golf is getting a bit of hip hop coming its way, and not before time. It beats the hell out an evening with Mike & The Mechanics!
