8 Of the best shots ever played at the PGA Championship

Plus one of the worst!

These are some of the very best shots ever played at the US PGA Championship. Not all of them lead to the victory, but every one was struck in the heat of battle. These are in chronological order, it would be nigh on impossible to all agree on which shot was best. Plus we've got a bonus worst shot, poor Greg Norman, he didn't have much luck did he?

Gary Player: 1972, Oakland Hills Country Club

Player was in trouble. He'd made two consecutive bogeys. He was losing his grasp on the trophy. He'd put himself in the rough, behind some big trees, with a lake to clear. He was up shit creek without a paddle. Yet somehow he fashioned himself one out of a nine iron, got it over the forest and said creek and hit this incredible shot, which helped secure a two shot victory.

Bob Tway: 1986, Inverness Club

Greg Norman held the 54 hole lead in all four majors in 1986. He only converted the Open. At the PGA Bob Tway did this to him on the 18th when tied for the lead. Best wining shot ever at a major? We think so.

John Daly: 1991, Crooked Stick

He came. He played. He kicked some ass. First alternate John Daly had driven through the night to get to the course. He only got in when Nick Price pulled out. Yet with no practice round, and Price's caddy Jeff (Squeaky) Medlin on the bag, John Daly powered his way to a three stroke victory. Just look at that mullet!!!

Sergio Garcia: 1999, Medinah Country Club

Sergio was just 19 years old. Tiger Woods was only 23. The world was a better place. He missed out by one, but Garcia announced himself to the world with this incredible recovery from behind a tree. Who would have guessed then he still wouldn't have a major in 2015?

TIger Woods: 2002, Hazeltine

The greatest shot Tiger ever played? These guy's seem to think so and they know what they are talking about.

Shaun Micheel: 2003 Oak Hill Country Club

Shaun Micheel had never won on the PGA Tour. He hasn't since the week in 2003. But no one can take this shot away from him on the 18th hole in the final round. Now that's clutch.

Y.E. Yang: 2009, Hazeltine

We golf publishing types have been banging on about hybrid clubs for a long time. This is the best advert for them ever as Y.E. Yang took it to Tiger Woods with a TaylorMade Rescue club that your dad would be embarrassed to use.

Rory McIlroy: 2014, Valhalla

He duffed it. It was meant to be a high draw. No matter this three wood from the deck on the tenth came out as a low stinger. It covered the 281 yards he needed it to, and he converted the putt for an eagle that got him back within a shot of the lead. Just maybe the best duff of all time.

And here's a shot that wasn't so good. Poor old Greg Norman again, seven years after Tway had beaten him on the same course...
