What’s up with Rory McIlroy?

As he misses Scottish Open cut

Rory McIlroy, the world’s No 4, has only gone and missed another cut – his third in four outings. So what’s going wrong?

McIlroy's shot a second round one-under 71, but it could not compensate for his opening round 74, and it was to be another weekend at home with his new missus.

He started strong with three birdies and no dropped shots on his front nine, but with a double bogey at the 13th, he lost his momentum.

He needed a birdie on the 18th to make it to the weekend, but he missed an 8 footer, so it was early home yet again.

"I'm frustrated but I thought I saw some good signs this week. My putting was definitely improved although my wedges were not quite there," said McIlroy.

"I'm just waiting for something, some sort of spark, something to go right, and the last couple weeks haven't been like that. Just got to keep plugging away and hopefully it turns around next week."

Despite his recent poor form, the bookies are still making him the third favourite, after Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth, and alongside of Jon Rahm at 16/1.

But with all those missed cuts, has he been playing enough golf to really be competitive?

I, for one, will be keeping my betting powder dry on Rory. How about 80/1 on Ian Poulter instead? Could he be this year’s surprise package? Second at the Players, and now leading the Scottish Open….
