147th Open Championship prize fund increased to $10.5 million

Up by $250,000

The prize fund for this year’s 147th Open Championship has increased by $250,000 to a total of $10.5 million. The winner will take home $1.89 million, the R&A confirmed on Monday.

“The prize fund reflects The Open’s position as one of the world’s great sporting events and we look forward to seeing the best players in the sport competing for the Claret Jug at Carnoustie,” said R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers.

The U.S. Open had a total prize fund of $12 million this year, whilst the U.S. Masters was $11 million, so the R&A are clearly trying to keep up.

The Open switched to awarding prize money in U.S. dollars in 2017, when Jordan Spieth won at Royal Birkdale. He collected $1.85 million for his efforts, so this year’s winner stands to trouser an extra $400,000.
