Leona Maguire's good year continued as she shot a seven-under-par 65 to lead the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship by a shot from Thailand's Thidapa Suwannapura.
The rookie was not in action at last week's U.S. Women's Open but opened at the Lake Merced course with a tournament equalling round. Maguire had nine birdies and two bogeys in her round, with a bogey on her last hole, the 9th, depriving her of the outright record.
"It's a tough golf course," Maguire said.
"You really have to hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens. I've been playing nice as of late. Things just haven't been quite clicking, and they clicked nicely this morning."
Jasmine Suwannapura of Thailand produced her eighth birdie of the day at her last hole to card a 66, and close within one shot of Maguire. Albane Valenzuela from Switzerland was another stroke back alongside American Alison Lee.
Multiple major winner Inbee Park was four strokes back on three-under alongside Jennifer Kupcho, Da Yeon Lee, Mariajo Uribe, Jane Park and Lauren Kim.
Lexi Thompson shrugged off the disappointment of her collapse in the U.S. Women's Open at nearby Olympic Club with a one-under 71.
Meanwhile, Michele Wie West, who is still on the comeback trail, rallied late to shoot a one-over 73.
Charley Hull is the best of the Brits after round one, following her one-over round of 73. Bronte Law and Jodi Ewart Shadoff are a further shot back but Georgia Hall had a disappointing five-over 77.
