The move to LIV Golf may pay early dividends to Henrik Stenson as he takes a three-shot lead into the final round of the LIV Golf Invitational at Bedminster. The Swede is not only looking good for the individual winner's cheque of $4 million but Team Majesticks GC, of which Stenson is a member, look sure to pick up at least the team second prize of $1.5 million.
Stenson, who gave up the Ryder Cup captaincy to join the LIV Golf ranks, shrugged off an early double-bogey at the 3rd to shoot a two-under-par 71 to lead on nine-under.
After the six at at the par four 3rd, which saw Stenson taking a penalty and opting to return to the tee, the Swede bounced back with an eagle at the par five 8th. Four birdies and two bogeys gave him a back nine of two-under.
"Today I definitely didn't have my best, but I was hanging in there, said Stenson.
"It's a tough golf course, and the greens are extremely quick and quite undulated. With the wind it's even harder to put the ball in the perfect spots, and yeah, it was a bit of a grind at times."
Dustin Johnson matched Stenson's 71 to sit three shots back with fellow Americans Patrick Reed and Taylor Gooch and Mexico's Carlos Ortiz a further shot back in a share of third.
With the winds getting up, the Bedminster course played almost two shorts harder than on day one. However, Gooch made light of the conditions with a bogey-free seven-under 64, which launched him up the leaderboard four back from Stenson.
Gooch's round also helped Aces GC take a healthy lead in the team event. Aces GC sit on twenty-under, a healthy six shots clear of Majesticks GC, who in turn have a seven shot cushion over Fireballs GC.
