Golf bodies keep up the pressure on Boris

England Golf CEO Jeremy Tomlinson is among a group of signatories on a letter to the Prime Minister which makes a compelling case for golf courses to be allowed to stay open during the second national lockdown. The letter argues that golf courses should remain open after the lockdown begins in England at midnight on Thursday. A copy of the letter is provided below.

Clarke grabs his first PGA Tour Champions title

Darren Clarke tapped in a short birdie putt at the last to register his first win in forty efforts on the PGA Tour Champions. The big man from Northern Ireland won by a single shot from Jim Furyk and defending champion Bernhard Langer at the TimberTech Champions in Boca Raton, Florida. It was the first victory for Clarke since his Open triumph at Royal St, George's in 2011.

Gay beats the youngsters in Bermuda

Brian Gay rolled in his long birdie putt at the first playoff hole at the Bermuda Championship to beat a man almost half his age and become the oldest winner on the PGA Tour since Davis Love III in 2015. "Well, this is absolutely insane," said  Gay after his round. "I’ve been playing awful since Covid… it’s been a struggle. I’ve been trying to work hard and get back."

Shinkwin claims maiden title in Cyprus

Callum Shinkwin defeated Kalle Samooja in a play-off to win his first European Tour title after a dramatic final day at the 2020 Aphrodite Hills Cyprus Open. The Englishman was two shots behind the Finn as he stood on the17th tee in regulation and while a birdie there edged him closer, his chances of victory looked slim when he found rough off the tee at the par five last.

Sadly following the Prime Minister's announcement Golf courses in England are set to shut when new national lockdown measures come into force at midnight on 5 November. Although a statement from England Golf suggests there may be some room for manoeuvre.

It's not the calculation of the Handicap that seems to be causing the most discussion but the differentiating factor between golf courses known as the 'Slope Rating'.
