Tiger Watch: Yup, TIger's back kids!
Words: Conor Froud
Tiger Woods is back! Tiger Woods is back in contention at a Major Championship after a masterful round of 66 left him at -5 after round three.
Despite a slow and conservative start to his round, his long game shot to life around the turn with some gorgeous drives off the tee splitting the Carnoustie fairways, and his short game continued to look superb around the greens as he fired in 6 birdies over the course of his round.
His round shot into life on the fourth hole as he knocked it into around 7 feet and nailed the putt, much to the excitement of the devoted fan base following him around the Carnoustie hills. He followed that up with another bird on the par five sixth hole as he looked to build in confidence and trust his long game more and more as the round unfolded.
But around the turn is where the American really set the course alight and captured the golfing world’s imagination once more.
Magical stuff around the turn
Despite a poor drive at nine into the thick stuff, he snuck a long iron onto the green. Once more his putter set alight as he made the putt from nearly 40 foot. Next on 10, he nailed his approach to just a foot. Yes, a foot, the crowd nearly lost it at this point, he knocked it in for -4 and just two shots of the current lead.
Next the man nearly hit the green on 11 good lord what did Tiger have for breakfast this morning? This 42 is putting me to shame looks like I need to hit the gym, but for TIger an easy two putt got him to -5 and left the Golf Punk team gasping for air.
But no! He wasn’t finished just yet, next victim, was 14 the tough par 5. The American creamed his second to find the green in two, and once more, a calming two putt left TIGER WOODS TIED FOR THE LEAD AT THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. Yes, you read that correctly.
Tough finish
Down the stretch, the 42 year old looked to tire, on 16 despite an unlucky tee shot, a leggy three putt led to his first dropped shot of the day. And despite a good 17th hole, a howler of a tee shot on 18 nearly ended up in the Barry Burn!
But much like the fighting champion he is, his character shone through, as he laid up and nailed his third shot into about 5 feet on the 18th. He converted the putt to sign off for a very impressive 66. A packed grandstand watched and applauded a fantastic performance from the 14 time Major Champion.
There is still much golf to be played over today and tomorrow, but once more today, the Tiger of old returned and ignited the spark in golfing fans hearts, who want to see the old maestro return to his former glories once more.
