Jeff Ritter: The World's Greatest Stretch
Getting loose with one simple move!
Words: Jeff Photography: Chris McInery
The majority of us warm up by loosening our jaws around a bacon sandwich, which is far from ideal and likely explains why we knobble it off the first tee.
Thing is most of us don’t have the time or inclination to hit the gym before the morning round. And never will. But our man Jeff knows this and so he’s come up with a simple stretch move that will loosen up all our key muscles in minutes. Full disclosure, you will look a bit of a berk doing it, so find a quiet spot to limber up before getting to the tee sharp and set.

Start by lunging forward with your left leg.
Place your left hand down in front of you as a supporting base and place your right elbow level with the instep of your left shoe. Your groin will feel like tightened elastic and you’ll look like Camilo reading a putt.
Swing your right arm under your body as far as you dare and then swing back stretching it way up over your head. Get your head to look at the sky and feel your whole back stretching out.
Bring your arm back down and place your right hand on the ground in front of you to form a stable base. From here rock back onto your right leg, stretching it out fully. Your back and hips should raise, your calves and hamstrings stretch like you are in the ‘set’ position at the start of a 100m.
Tricky bit here. From the ‘set’ position you need to stand up and bring your right knee up in the air. Your finishing position should be balanced on your left leg and looking like a frozen running man. It’s difficult to maintain balance, but you’ll get there.
Now lunge forward onto your right foot and mirror the process again. Do four sets of these and you will have warmed your muscles up from head to toe in less than five minutes.
