You are what you eat
Pros v GolfPunk diet
Words: GolfPunk
We take a look at what the pros are eating before a game and during the round in an effort to find out where the GolfPunk team might be going wrong when it come to the golf diet!
Breakfast
Egg White Omelette v Bacon sandwich
Apparently Tiger often kicks off the day with an egg white omelette. We found the perfect recipe at this tasty website. It’s all rather, well white, and where are all the carbs we need to enable one to grip it and rip it?
Ingredients: 3 egg whites, 2 green onions, and green stuff etc.
A somewhat different offering to the bacon sandwich we scoff down before swilling down the remains of our coffee, pulling on our shoes and heading out on to the links.
Ingredients: bread, bacon, tomato ketchup or brown sauce
Verdict
Sorry Tiger old chap but it will take a lot to come between a GolfPunker and his pre round sarnie. Maybe a bit of Tom ketch may improve that white thing but we think not.
Bacon sarnie all the way.
On the course
Birdie Balls v Snickers
A favourite of Rickie Fowler are Birdie Balls, “They’re money,” according to Ricky. The size of a golf ball they are stacked full of calories and are healthier than Fowler’s previous snack of choice, that American delicacy, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Apparently, they come in various flavours, Ricky prefers a Nutella type, oh and Michelle Wie is also in to the balls.
Ingredients: Pitted dates, peanut butter, pea protein, sorghum, and a flavor of choice - such as Nutella-inspired hazelnut cocoa.
A regularly stocked item in the pro shop is that favourite choccy fix the Mars bar. Getting the munchies coming around the turn, cue a rummage in the bag for some fuel. One sugar rush later and we are prancing down the fairway once again. What do you mean, what about the sugar come down?
Ingredients: Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Skimmed Milk Powder, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa Mass, Sunflower Oil, Milk Fat, Lactose and Protein from Whey (from Milk), Whey Powder (from Milk), Palm Fat, Fat Reduced Cocoa, Barley Malt Extract, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), and lots of other stuff.
The verdict
Much as we love our Mars bar, the Birdie Balls do look a more manageable size and despite all those healthy things in them the calories do look tempting.
OK we’ll give them balls a go!
Nunn tablets in water v Beer
Its all about electrolytes with the Nunn Tablets (and yes, we had to Google it as well.) Apparently, in order to maintain peak performance, an athlete must replace both water and electrolytes; otherwise, he or she will be forced to slow down. A few of these tablets in water does the trick.
Each electrolyte tablet contains the following: sodium (360 mg), potassium (100 mg), magnesium (25 mg), calcium (13 mg), vitamin c (38 mg) and sugar (1g).
On a hot summer’s day whether the round is going well or badly the ideal drink has to be a chilly tube containing ice cold beer, preferably bought at the half way hut, or from the roving golf cart. We're partial to something from our friends at Brewdog such as their Punk IPA – with a name like that it has to be a winner!
Ingredients: water, malted barley. hops, yeast - yum!
Verdict
Tricky one here as we do love our beer, although we accept it is not always performance enhancing
OK we’ll pop a couple of the pills in the can and call it a draw!
