Mark Ronson plays gig at Abu Dhabi GC
Words: Daniel Owen
Mark Ronson last night played a gig at a golf club. It wasn't the captains annual dinner and dance though. And there was definitely no jacket and tie required. Instead they were playing the first Green Grooves Abu Dhabi concert.
A little bit different to their January golf spectator crowd, this was less polite applause, and more full on party time. Mr OohWee, and Valerie, co-headlined the show with Labrinth. The gig was set in the shadow of the iconic Falcon Clubhouse. It’s safe to say this isn’t your grandad's golf club.
Paul Booth is general Manager at Abu Dhabi Golf club and he had this to say.
“Golf clubs are traditionally very conservative institutions but the performance by Mark Ronson and Labrinth shows that we, as a Troon Golf-managed club and as a sport, are determined to showcase all that our family-friendly club has to offer and embrace concepts not readily associated with the Royal and Ancient game. It was a fantastic evening and you could see by the reaction of the crowd that all five artists hit the spot…we’re thrilled everyone had such a memorable time.”
And how right is that? Nothing wrong with a bit of music on the course. We’re all for a set of speakers on a buggy blasting out some bangers. The more golf clubs around the world realise that they need to expand their horizons, the better it is for the game. Whether it brings more people into golf, maybe not, but if it can bring more cash into the game we love, then we’re all for it.
With more gigs planned for next year we can’t wait to see who’s playing next.
