Last week’s winner and GolfPunk’s tip for the China Open, Jorge Campillo, leads the way once again after an opening round of 65. Joining the Spaniard on the same mark are Tapio Pulkkanen of Finland and David Lipsky of America.
Campillo’s impressive round included 5 birdies and an eagle. The eagle, which came at the ninth hole saw Campillo out in only 30 shots. The back nine was more of a struggle as the rain swept in and impacted his last few holes but the Spaniard held on to share the lead come close of play. “The last few holes were a little challenging” said Campillo, a slight understatement given the driving rain up the 18th hole.
Lipsky, who is a two-time winner on the European Tour, was also out of the traps fast as well with a round which included eight birdies and just the one dropped shot. Lipsky was not that happy with his ball striking but got his putter working. “I hit it alright, not great, but I think I holed 150 feet of putts today so that always helps” said the 30-year-old American.
Pulkkanen, who has to be a Finn with that name, was the other man on seven under mark. The trilby wearing Pulkannen was delighted with his round. He reached the turn in two under but came alive on the back nine with five birdies.
The second round of this the 25th Volvo China Open, which is sanctioned by the China Golf Association and the European and Asian Tours, will get underway at 6.40am local time on Friday.
