Matt Wallace, saw a return to form to take a one shot lead into the weekend at the British Masters at Hillside. Wallace’s new approach to the game, including the hiring of fitness expert Dr Steve McGregor, appears to be paying dividends as he added a 67 to his opening 65.
Wallace had been struggling of late, missing the cut in two of his last three events but has started a new strength and conditioning program under Stephen McGregor. McGregor has helped both Lee Westwood and Rory McIroy reach number one in the world. "I worked hard the last couple weeks and it paid off so I'm very happy” said a smiling Wallace.
Wallace, one of GolfPunk’s picks of the week, is on 12 under one ahead of fellow Englishman Ross Fisher, Scot Richie Ramsay, Swede Niklas Lemke and Belgian Thomas Detry.
Lemke had an amazing run of eight consecutive birdies from the 13th, having started at the 10th tee, in his round of 64 which was only one off the world record.
Elsewhere Matthew Jordan, who broke the course record with a fabulous 63 on the opening day, could only card a level-par 72 and sits three off the lead. Lee Westwood sits one shot further back on 8 under alongside another of GolfPunk’s picks, Victor Dubuisson of France.
Host of the event, Tommy Fleetwood, is still in the running as he heads in to the weekend. He added a steady 69 to his opening 68 and is five back of Wallace on seven under.
