Helligkilde credits staff model ball for tour card
Advanced 4-piece ball & clubs secure Road to Mallorca title
Danish golf sensation Marcus Helligkilde has credited his Wilson Staff Model ball with playing a major part in helping him secure the Challenge Tour ‘Road to Mallorca’ title last weekend - thereby gaining his first ever European Tour card for next season.
Using the advanced 4-piece Urethane Staff Model ball, along with the striking Staff Model CB Forged irons and the Staff Model Forged wedge (50*), the 25-year-old claimed his third victory of the season at the Rolex Challenge Tour Grand Final supported by The R&A and jumped two places to the top of the Road to Mallorca Rankings. He also had the Wilson PMP Tour Grind (56*) and Standard (60*) wedges in the bag.
“I can’t thank Wilson enough for the help and support they’ve given me this season and I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for the top-quality balls amazing irons,” said Helligkilde, who only started playing the brand’s products this season.
The feel of the Staff Model ball on the greens helped Helligkilde rank first on Tour in the Putts Per Green, with 1.67 holed against the Tour average of 1.78 and the Staff Model CB Forged irons helped him hit over 80% of Greens in Regulation this season (ranked 2nd) compared to the Tour average of 64.90.
“When I first started using the ball, I was so impressed with the touch and feel on and around the green and that has shown in my putting stats and I really felt dialled in with my irons all season, which look great and feel amazing,” added Helligkilde.
Despite not having full Challenge Tour status at the start of the year, Helligkilde won the Swiss Challenge and Vierumäki Finnish Challenge earlier this season and finished 34,337 points clear at the top.
Another Wilson Staffer, Andrew Wilson, also gained his European Tour card in dramatic fashion by birdieing four of the last five holes of the season to climb back inside the top 20, after a double bogey at the 13th had moved him outside of the projected graduation spots.
“It was a bit of a roller coaster ride at the end, but I’m absolutely delighted to be playing on the European Tour next season,” said Wilson, who also played the Staff Model ball and CB Forged irons, along with the Staff Model wedges (50*, 54* & 60*) and Utility iron (21*).
“The wins by Marcus this season and the performances of Andrew, really highlights the Tour validation for our irons, wedges and ball,” said Doug Wright, Wilson Golf’s Global Commercial Director.
“Every golfer knows how good Wilson irons are, but I’m particularly proud of the Staff Model ball as our team has worked so hard in creating a Tour performance ball, which we’re now seeing those rewards,” he added.
Continuing its pioneering trend in low compression golf ball technology, the Wilson Staff Model ball – launched last year – was developed alongside the brand’s Tour Advisory Staff members to deliver maximum distance, a high-level of spin and exceptional control.
Advanced V-COR™ performance technology magnifies energy around the core composition of the new ball to generate maximum velocity off the clubface for greater distance. The four layers on the ball work together to produce unmatched shot-shaping off the tee, Tour-level workability off the fairways, predictable stability on approach shots and exceptional control around the green. The Urethane cover features a seamless 362-dimple pattern that smooths airflow around the ball for a lower flight trajectory.
The Staff Model CB Forged irons are engineered to meet the high-performance standards expected by Tour-level players and features 20-grams of high-density tungsten weighting in the toe of the long and mid irons, enhancing the head stability at impact and lowering the centre of gravity for reliably consistent shots.
A forged 8620 carbon steel face is backed by an integrated Impact Mass Area, providing a solid, muscle back-like feel, while the distinctive cavity back design delivers maximum consistency during shot shaping.
