The Sunday Driver: Knuth High Heat
Easiest-to-hit driver you have never heard of
Words: Daniel Owen
The Knuth High Heat is the most forgiving driver you’ve probably never heard of. We first tried it at last year's PGA show. We’ve just got back from this year's show and there is still nothing quite like it.
Dean Knuth is a man you may also never have heard of, but he is responsible for the Slope Rating system of measuring golf course in the US for difficulty. His driver design might make Slope Ratings null and void, however, as it makes every golf course easier.
The High Heat does two things differently to most drivers:
1): It has an ultra low centre of gravity, 25% deeper than most drivers on the market.
2): It has a far higher MOI or Moment of Inertia than most drivers.
These combine to make it as forgiving a driver as humanly possible that flies miles.
Why? Because most golfers have their miss-hits low on the face, but as this driver is forgiving their shots will fly further, while the high MOI means it won’t twist open or shut as much at impact on a miss-hit.
The face is highly polished, which looks a bit odd at first, but soon you’ll realise that this makes it possible to see exactly where you hit each drive on the face. It really is a good indicator of how you are striking the ball, while the blue raised crown is great for alignment.
Dean Knuth designed seven distinct zones of different variable face-thicknesses to maximise the distance for off-centre hits across the face. Dean’s face also includes his patented parabolic lobes (Not his actual face though, right? – Ed) in the upper heal and toe of the face, which reduce the loss of kinetic energy at impact when the club face hits the golf ball.
As a result, High Heat achieves increased ball speed and reduced spin, resulting in longer distance on centre and off-centre hits and an optimum feel.
While you may never see one of these on the course, it’s definitely one of the most forgiving drivers ever designed. If your opponent has one in their bag, we would not bet them for cash, as they aren’t going to miss too many fairways.
