Odyssey X-Act Tank Chipper
Make the game easier for yourself
Words: Daniel Owen
Chippers. They get a bad rap. But I've never liked playing with the old boys who used a chipper because it normally meant they’d figured out a way to get the ball close despite the limitations of their short game. It’s not how, its how many. Now Odyssey have got a new chipper to solve your short game woes.
Chippers are nothing new but the Guru that is Roger Cleveland helped Odyssey come up with something a little different to what had come before. Here he explains how it can help you.
First up the X-Act Tank Chipper uses the Tank weighting philosophy to help ensure a smoother swing, promoting more consistent contact. The head is heavier, at 355 gram, and the heavy grip counterbalances the club to keep the hands quiet. Not only that this SuperStroke Chipper grip is oversized and longer than standard. Again this helps quieten the hands while being able to move your hands further up and down the club for different types of shots.
The Hybrid-like X-Act sole design improves turf interaction around the green, especially on tight lies, to help eliminate stubbed or bladed chip shots. Anyone who has ever tried chipping with a hybrid will know how much more forgiving they are on bad stroke than an iron.
Like most Odyssey products, the X-Act Tank features an insert. The single layer polymer insert provides soft feel for both long and short shots around the green.
Finally two Marxman alignment stripes run the length of the club to make lining up shots easier for better accuracy.
Chippers aren’t for everyone but if you need help don’t let your ego get the better of you and give one a try. What's the worst that can happen? If your chipping is that bad you’re considering one then we reckon they can only improve your short game.
The Odyssey X-Act Tank will retail for £109.
