More Wedges

Bruce Sizemore has been thinking way out of the box...

We’ve seen some crazy golf looking golf clubs in our time. But these new wedges from Bruce Sizemore definitely take the biscuit.

When it comes to golf clubs, they’ve all evolved over the years. Metal woods, cavity back irons, high MOI mallet putters. Yet if their is a club that has changed the least it’s definitely the wedge. While it has been improved over the years, with modern grooves, changes to the centre of gravity, and different sole grinds, the modern wedge can still be heavily traced back to what Gene Saracen first invented in the 1930’s.

It’s safe to say Bruce Sizemore’s new wedge doesn't look like anything you’ve seen before. While not a household name, Sizemore has designed putters that have won on the PGA Tour. Recently he has been designing clubs away from the public eye, and this is what he has come up with.

As an absolute geek, I’ve got a lot of time for Transformers. “More than meets the eye” and all that. Well that’s exactly what these wedges resemble to us, and they’re definitely more than meets the eye. Each head is made from seven separate parts. They feature adjustable faces. Adjustable lofts, and an adjustable sole. Each part is 100% miled for consistancy.

First up is a friction milled face launches it higher and spins the ball more. A proprietary cross milled machining method optimising spin and trajectory. Designed to get that ball ripping back once it’s landed.

There there is the adjustable lofts. “I wasn’t looking for small incremental increases in wedge design. I set out for an all in one revolutionary design.” There are three Individual hosel adapters give you all the loft angles you have wanted in one wedge. The hosels are also incredibly light, 10 grams compared to t amore traditional wedge which weighs around 70 grams in the hosel. This saved weight is used elsewhere in the head to improve the ballflfight.

And then there is adjustable bounce. The bounce angle can be adjusted  from 4 to 14* with both vertical and diagonal adjustments. A lower leading edge and initial bounce profile creates better playability on square shots and tight lies. There are three rear flange options which allow you to choose the grind profile that best suits your swing style and course conditions. Tour player adjust the bounce on their wedges by putting a whole new set in play. With these you just need to change one part of the wedge.

These wedge are going to retail for $400. That’s a lot of dough. But Sizemore thinks in the long term they will work out cheaper. With their replaceable faces, all you need to do is replace that part when the grooves wear out. The wedges are going to be available in raven black, and tour raw finishes.

Do we like the looks of these? No. Did we like the way the Ping Zing 2 used to look back in the day, or the Big Bertha, or the TaylorMade Spider? No. And they all worked really well. While we don’t necessarily like the cover, we are definitely intrigued by the book. We’ve got to the point now with our golf where anything that lowers scores is welcomed.
