Angel Hidalgo captured his maiden DP World Tour title with a home country win at this years Spanish Open.

Hidalgo went wire-wire with LIV Golf's Jon Rahm to clinch the victory, with a birdie on the 2nd hole playoff to overcome Jon Rahm.

In a field filled with a combination of the best players LIV Golf and the DP World Tour have to offer, rounds of 65, 67 and 68 gave Hidalgo a 2 shot lead heading into the final round, where he carded a -1 70, to join Rahm in a sudden death playoff.

Angel would go on to make 2 birdies in the play-off, securing the win against one of his idols and heroes, Jon Rahm, in turn catapulting himself up to 18th on the Race to Dubai.

"Two or three years ago, I was on the first tee, in the trees, supporting Jon. Without playing, I just came here to Madrid to see the tournament," stated Hidalgo.

"Insane, absolutely insane," Hidalgo said. "It was weird because I was pretty relaxed all day, I don't know why. That's amazing. That's for everyone who believed in me."

Missing out on his 4th Spanish Open title with a second place finish in what is his 2nd DP World Tour appearance of the season, including the appearance at the Paris Olympics, Jon Rahm spoke afterwards:

"Thinking that on Tuesday morning I was in hospital in another country, on the other side of the Atlantic, in the end, I'm happy,"

"It's a pity to have lost in the play-off [but] I can't say it has been a bad week."
