Frenchman Victor Dubuisson birdied the 18th hole to win his second Turkish Airlines Open, beating South African Jaco Van Zyl by a single shot. And what did he do first? He phoned his mum! Bless him.
He shot a final round of 66, which included 7 birdies and an eagle on the par five 11th. He had a double bogey on the par three fifth, and dropped a further shot on the par four seventh to make the turn in 34. A 32 on the back nine was enough to secure his victory.
He had the most birdies of the week with 27 in total, and his victory has moved him into seventh place in the Race to Dubai.
Commenting on his victory Dubuisson said: "It's been so hard. I've wanted to play this year, but there's been many times when I haven't been able to for personal reasons. I also felt like I'd lost my game and sometimes when that happens you wonder if you're every going to get it back again." Well, I think you’ve answered that one Victor.
Jaco Van Zyl played well all week, and was not deterred by the prospect of being chased down by a really strong field from day one. A birdie, birdie finish from Dubuisson saw him squeezed out right at the end, but he can certainly be pleased with his week.
In third was Kiradech Aphibarnrat, a shot ahead of Byeong Hun An. Chris Wood was fifth, a shot ahead of the American Peter Uihlein and Rory McIlroy.
It all started going wrong for McIlroy as he neared the turn, with dropped shots on the eight and ninth. He dropped another on the par four 12th, and could only make two birdies on the back nine to card a 71.
Having shot three 67’s he was confident of going lower on his final round, as he knew he had another gear to find. But it just didn’t happen for him.
Others to mention in dispatches are Danny Willett and Lee Westwood. Willett tied 11th with Westwood, shooting a three under 69 to Westwood’s par 72.
