"They're going to try and beat me. I want to beat them, too. If I enter an event, I'm going to try and win the thing. I know that's a tall order, but the mindset is still there."
Well, they did ask him! What's he supposed to say? Naah, don't fancy my chances much to be honest. Tiger has won 79 titles on the PGA Tour, and while he hasn't recorded a tournament victory anywhere since 2013 (Let alone a major, the last of which was the 2008 US Open which is actually... eight years ago... – Ed) ... and while he hasn't won for a while, the memory bank is stuffed with holed putts, vanquished foes and lifted trophies.
Tiger Woods says this is Phase 2 of his life as he returns to the PGA Tour for the first time in 15 months at his own tournament, the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.
"I want to play for a lifetime, but I can't compete for a lifetime," Tiger said. "I call it phase two, because I can't play this game forever at a competitive high level.
"Would I love to? Yes. Guys have played into their 70s and 80s but they're not competing at a world-class level."
But Tiger is Tiger and he just can't help himself. He wouldn't be teeing it up this week unless he thought he could win. That's his mentality. That's what got him over the line so many times and won him 14 majors. Tomorrow he is paired with Patrick Reed, another player whose grit and determination is writ large on his sleeve, and Tiger tells us he is fully focused on wining this weekend
Get your beer and your popcorn ready. It's Tiger time.
