The world reacts to Muirfield vote decision
But not everyone is anti.....
Words: John Dean
Here's how the golf world has reacted to the news From Muirfield they have refused to allow women members. But one person supports the no decision at Muirfield.
Peter Alliss on the otherhand has been speaking to The Daily Telegraph, and he supports the no voters.
Alliss told The Telegraph: “The fact is if you talked to the wives of members of Muirfield they would be horrified at the prospect of being allowed to join. The wives can use all the facilities at the club but it doesn’t cost them anything. If they had to pay to join they would be horrified."
We think you are on the wrong side of history on this one Mr. Alliss.
Here's a copy of the letter from the old guard who didn't want any change. We think it says it all. The unsigned letter was sent to 33 traditionalists at Muirfield on the eve of the vote to allow women members for the first time.
Under a headline "The risks" the letter says: "We are not an ordinary club. Our special nature - 'a gentleman's club where golf is played' - is quite unique with its fraternity built inter alia on foursomes play with a round taking only the same time as lunch and leaving enough time for a further round after lunch (even in mid winter).
"This is one of the miracles in modern day play and is much admired. Our foursomes and speedy play would be endangered."
The letter then suggests that any woman member at Muirfield is "bound to feel uncomfortable" - and makes the suggestion that letting in women could disrupt the club's lunch arrangements.
The letter claims it would take a "very special lady gofer" to be able to perform at the same level as the club's men.
"The introduction of lady members is bound to create difficulties. Regardless of the conventions when they first join they are likely over time to question our foursomes play, our match system, the uncompromising challenge our fine links present, our lunch arrangements.
"It will take a very special lady golfer to be able to do all the things that are expected of them in the template which is suggested and the ladies' membership as a whole may not meet this standard."
So they're worried about their lunch arrangements! We can't see what on earth having women as members has to do with lunch. But then we don't live on planet Muirfield.
